Vitalik Buterin is a Russian-Canadian software developer and the creator of Ethereum, which he conceived in 2013. He is also a co-founder of Bitcoin Magazine, established in 2011, and has contributed to open-source cryptocurrency software. Buterin authored Ethereum’s original whitepaper, proposing a blockchain designed to support smart contracts and decentralized applications beyond Bitcoin’s primary focus on digital payments. His research interests include blockchain technology, digital currencies, cryptography, decentralized networks, public goods funding, and open-source software. He is currently a Founder at the Ethereum Foundation.

Buterin began his career in the cryptocurrency space through writing and active participation in the Bitcoin community, co-founding Bitcoin Magazine in 2011. While studying at the University of Waterloo, he explored the potential of blockchain technology beyond Bitcoin’s scripting capabilities. In 2013, he published the Ethereum whitepaper and began working on the project full-time after receiving the Thiel Fellowship in 2014.
