Hivemapper is a blockchain-based mapping network rewarding users for collecting real-world map data.
Hivemapper is a decentralized mapping network built on the Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) model that is transforming how maps are created and updated in real time. Instead of relying on expensive mapping vehicles, Hivemapper leverages a global community of drivers who capture street-level imagery using AI-powered dashcams called Bees. Powered by blockchain technology, the platform rewards contributors with its native HONEY token, creating a drive-to-earn ecosystem where everyday driving helps build a continuously updated global map.
| Year | Key Achievements |
| 2015 | Hivemapper was founded by Ariel Seidman and Evan Moss in San Francisco. |
| The project raised a $3M seed round, backed by Spark Capital, Google Ventures, and Founder Collective, to test drone-based mapping and data collection ideas. | |
| 2016 - 2020 | The team moved away from drones and shifted toward commercial fleet tracking and street-level mapping. During this period, they focused on building core mapping software and working on scalable infrastructure. |
| 2021 | Work began on a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) model. |
| The team also designed custom dashcams to collect mapping data directly from everyday drivers. | |
| 2022 | Hivemapper raised an $18M Series A round led by Multicoin Capital. |
| In November, the Hivemapper Network mainnet went live on the Solana blockchain, introducing the native $HONEY token to reward contributors. | |
| 2023 | The network expanded quickly across 90+ countries. By the end of the year, contributors had mapped around 90 million road kilometers and uploaded over 3 billion street-level images. |
| 2024 | Bee Maps, a wholly owned subsidiary, was launched to manage enterprise mapping products. |
| The company introduced Dashcam S hardware and started using AI training games to process imagery more effectively. | |
| 2025 | Hivemapper announced major commercial partnerships, including real-time mapping support for Volkswagen’s autonomous vehicle (Robotaxi) unit. |
| A $32M funding round led by Pantera Capital helped scale hardware production to meet rising enterprise demand. |
