Cowen’s career started in the fields of science and education through jobs such as a teacher and researcher at Virginia Air and Space Center and North Carolina State University. Cowen went on to join NASA for distributed space system simulations and then moved to the University of New Mexico as a research assistant. His scientific research interests focused mainly on nuclear engineering, computer simulations, materials science, and high-performance computing.
