Manuela M Veloso

Manuela Veloso joined JP Morgan in 2018 as Head of Artificial Intelligence Research to pioneer AI research in the financial services industry. Her team now includes 115 Ph.D. and MS-credentialed researchers with AI-related backgrounds at J.P. Morgan offices across the globe. Manuela has worked for more than 30 years in AI and before joining JP Morgan she was a faculty in the Computer Science Department and the Head of the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University, where she was a University Professor, the highest academic accolade bestowed by the university, and holds the Herbert A. Simon Chair in Computer Science. She has been honored as an Einstein Chair Professor by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering for “her contributions to artificial intelligence and its applications to robotics and the financial domain.” She is a past president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and of the RoboCup Federation. She is a fellow of the AAAI, IEEE, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Manuela has a BSc. and MSc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon, an MA in Computer Science from Boston University, and an MSc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University.
