Gavin Andresen is the former Bitcoin lead developer. He is a software developer of 3D graphics and virtual reality software and is best known for his investment and involvement in bitcoin. He became associated with creating items for the bitcoin market in 2010 and was proclaimed by Satoshi Nakamoto as the lead designer of the reference execution for bitcoin client programming after Satoshi Nakamoto declared his departure. He graduated from Princeton University in 1988. He started his career working in 3D illustration programming at Silicon Graphics Computer Systems. In 1996, he co-created the VRML 2.0 in particular, and later distributed a reference manual for VRML 2.0. 

He was the lead engineer for a part of the bitcoin digital currency  project, attempting to make a protected, stable "cash for the Internet." Andresen found bitcoin in 2010, believing its plan to be splendid. Not long after he made a site named The Bitcoin Faucet which offered bitcoin. In April 2011, Forbes cited Andresen as saying, "Bitcoin is intended to take us back to a decentralized cash of individuals," and "this resembles preferred gold over gold." After joining the engineers adding to Bitcoin alongside Satoshi Nakamoto, he proceeded to turn into the lead designer of the client programming for the bitcoin network. He ventured back as lead maintainer in 2014.

He has not added to Bitcoin since February 2016. He had become disparaging of the disappointment of bitcoin designers to increment network limit and aided set up with Bitcoin XT as option software.
