2011

BitPay is a Bitcoin wallet that was launched in May 2011 in Orlando, Florida, by Tony Gallippi and Stephen Pair. This was done for the purpose of enabling early adopter merchants to use BitPay services to process Bitcoin payments without being negatively affected by their volatility.

2013

BitPay secured $2 million of Series A funding from Founders Fund. The firm relocated its HQ to Atlanta, Georgia, to benefit from the fintech ecosystem. By 2013, BitPay had been used by 10,000 merchants.

2014

BitPay obtained $30 million of Series B funding, including contributions from Richard Branson. In addition, Sacramento Kings and Zynga became BitPay's partners. It was also in 2014 that BitPay sponsored the St. Petersburg Bowl, becoming the first crypto company to sponsor a North American college sporting event.

2016

The company issued the BitPay Visa Prepaid Card, which was available to US citizens. With this card, users were able to convert their crypto assets to fiat currency.

2018

BitPay got the BitLicense, which is the Virtual Currency License from the Department of Financial Services of New York State (NYDFS).

2021

BitPay increased its coverage of additional digital assets like stablecoins and meme coins. Also, it added to the list of merchants by partnering with brands such as AMC Theatres, Gucci, and TAG Heuer.

2023

BitPay launched BitPay Bill Pay in the United States. Users can pay credit cards, mortgages, utility bills, and auto loans directly from their non-custodial crypto wallets.
