AWE was first established by augmentereality.org in 2010. Its main objective was to speed up the acceptance of augmented reality by assembling influential industry figures, such as developers, entrepreneurs, product leaders, C-level executives, enthusiasts, the media, and analysts. There were just 300 guests and a few exhibitors during the first AWE event. Thousands of people from all over the world attend AWE events today, along with hundreds of sponsors, exhibitors, and a wide network of experts in augmented reality, virtual reality, and other immersive technologies.

The mission is to help the XR community in advancing augmented reality and virtual reality technology to develop humanity. After the industry successfully reaches the milestone of 1 billion active AR users in 2020, AWE hopes to focus the industry's attention over the following ten years on its own primary goals of helping people all around the world to study, connect, and advance within the XR industry.
