The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners is the biggest anti-fraud organization in the world. The ACFE works to eradicate fraud and corruption around the world by providing top-notch training, providing the CFE certificate, and developing a vibrant, international network of anti-fraud experts. The office in Austin, Texas, a discussion that led to the creation of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) did take place in 1985. The ACFE came into being through a casual conversation between Dr. Joseph T. Wells, Chairman of the ACFE and a former accountant who joined the FBI, and Dr. Donald Cressey, the top criminologist in the nation. At the time, two different groups were in charge of fraud detection and deterrence: accountants who had no experience investigating fraud and investigators who had no experience with accounting.
